Natives from Korsou Connecting Online

So, let's say you're at a Happy Hour in New York City, Boston, Chicago, or San Francisco, and you tell someone you're from Curacao and they go (as they often do) "Where's that??". How do you describe where Curacao is, what it looks like, etc.? One thing I HATE saying but unfortunately works is "It's right next to Aruba".

Just say, Dutch Antilles, Carribean....Or indeed like Vane said off the coast of Venezuela. But if you can avoid relating it to any near island or country would be better. Tell them where Blue Curacao comes from, ha!

After God build the universe the stars sky and heaven He rested. On the eight day He got an after thought. He said, thinking loudly: “I should make a place on earth, so nice, so pretty and so attractive that it will give people an idea what Heaven looks like”. I will make an island that produces world little leaguers and mayor leaguers like Andruw Jones, Hensley Meulens and Randall Simon. I’ll give them nice, friendly people that go along fine. I will give them liquor, as clear and pure as the beaches I plant along every mile the island is long. They will call it Blue Curaçao. His Angels right away protested and advised him not to proceed. With a place like that they argued, nobody ever wants to come to heaven anymore. They would all go to Curaçao instead “Don’t worry” God said. “I haven’t told you yet, but they have to elect their own politicians”.

While you are at it: Teach people to pronounce Curaçao as Cure-A-Saw NOT Cure-A-Cow.

While travelling of course people always ask: "Where are you from"? When I say from Curaçao, most of the times the first reaction you get is: "Uhmm...where? Can you say that again"? Hahaha. Others say "ahh ok"...then I ask: Do you know where that is? They'd say: Yes, that's near Brazil, isn't it? Hahaha.

I always say "a small island in the southern Caribbean Sea", just 60 km off the northwestern coast of Venezuela. And, like others here said, I always say that it's the island where the "real" Blue Curacao comes from...those they sell in Europe etc. are mostly fake Blue Curacao. :)

I hate using the "next to aruba" line as well...

aruba has been made famous by that Kokomo song by the beach boys and most recently by nathalie holloway as we all know....despite that, a lot of people really don't know WHERE aruba is...
Soooo i don't use the "next to aruba" line... I don't even use the "off the coast of venezuela" either.

I think it's irrelevant to explain the geographical location of the island anymore, because most people (at least where I live) don't know the map of the world anyways.
People are more intrigued to know the characteristics of the island, and what sets Curacao apart from the rest of the world. They will be bored if I have to teach them geography.

Therefore My Reply: A tiny little island, populated by as many different cultures as there are colorful buildings....you can use at least 3 or 4 languages in 1 conversation and everyone would still completely understand what your talking about. It's only about 30 miles at it's longest stretch, but the diversity and beauty is overwhelming and pleasurable. It's sunny almost every day of the year, yet the cooling ocean breeze keeps you calm and relaxed. Time goes by so slowly so you can soak up on energy and revitalize body. It's where I was born and grew up, where all my memories are stored and where my passion lives on.
It's where I call home.
